Sciatica Ayurvedic Treatment About Ayurveda

About Sciatica Ayurvedic Treatment

Sciatica is a disease associated with the the pinching and inflammation of the sciatic nerve in the lumbosacral spine. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It originates from the lower back of the nerve roots of the lumbar spine to the feet. There will be pricking pain, which spreads from lower back region over the buttocks to the legs and sometimes even to the toes. The pain is usually caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatic nerve plays an important role in forwarding instructions from the brain across the spinal cord to your legs. Sciatic nerve allows feeling perception in your legs. According to studies, approximately 60-90% of people of age in between 45-60 suffer from back pain. This can be caused by several conditions affecting the lower back, lumbar spondylosis, disc prolapse, herniated disc etc. When sudden and violent pain occur in the lumbar spine, this causes irritation in the vertebral nerves. If the irritation is caused in the sciatic nerve, its is called a sciatica condition.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica is not considered as an independent disease condition, it is always seen as a companion symptom for other diseases. Some are discussed below-

  • Abrupt and unusual movements, like lifting bending, etc.

  • Disc prolapse: This is caused by incorrect loading or lack of movement. The intervertebral discs normally sit between the individual vertebrae. If any displacement to the discs happens, they press on the spinal nerves in the spinal cord. This radiates pain in the lower back, which radiates to the legs and to the toes depending on the pressure intensity.

  • A degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal can cause squeezing of sciatic or spinal nerves.

  • Herniated or slipped disc condition can cause circulation disorders within the spine area. This can cause compressions in the spinal nerves including sciatic nerve.

  • Spondylitis/ ankylosing spondylitis- This causes degenerative wear and tear of the joints surrounding the discs. This can cause compressions in the surrounding spinal nerves including sciatic nerve.

  • Lumbar spondylosis/ Spondylolisthesis- in this condition individual vertebrae move against each other and pinch nerve roots. This is helped by sitting for long hours, frequent bending, stress caused in the spine due to lifting of heavy loads etc.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The symptoms of sciatica varies with individuals. Common symptom is pain, which can vary from acute pain or slight discomfort to intense pain with difficulty in sitting, standing, walking etc.

Some of the noted symptoms are-

  • Pain in the buttock, extending from the waist to the feet. Pain is increased on long hours of sitting or standing, coughing, sneezing, etc.

  • Numbness or weakness, burning sensation in the legs.

  • Unbearable pain, muscle spasms, etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Sciatica

According to Ayurveda, Sciatica is known as Gridhrasi and is caused because of an imbalance of vata-dosha. Vata is the body's bio-energy, which represents the air or wind and manages all movements in the body. Sciatica condition is also caused by the imbalance of combination of vata-Kapha- dosha, this is responsible for lubrication and body fluids. So the treatment aims at balancing the vata and vata-kapha doshas.

Ayurveda explains the root cause of inflammation as digestion problems. The digestion problems cause excessive accumulation of toxins (‘ama’). So the treatment process focusses on detoxification procedures.

Ayurvedic treatment of Sciatica involves internal medication, a strict ayurvedic diet and external detoxification therapies.

A typical Ayurvedic treatment procedure starts with-

Consultation with an ayurveda physician. (We at superbeing arranges free consultation over the phone or email with a specialized doctor, provided you have send a detailed description of the disease condition and the concerned medical reports)

The doctor performs thorough diagnosis of your body by analyzing your medical condition, body constitution and the doshas causing the illness. He then prescribes a treatment routine to be followed-

A typical treatment routine includes:

   1. No of days required for treatment

   2. The therapies to be followed in each stages of treatment

   3. Number of total sessions required for each therapy

   4. Internal medicines and its timings

   5. Diet to be followed during treatment

   6. Do’s and Don’ts  to be followed before and after each session

Panchakarma defines a number of treatment methods, for the removal of toxins. This involves both internal and external medications and an ideal diet.

Some for the Panchakarma therapies performed in treating Sciatica condition are:

Abhyanga: Abhyanga is a part of Panchakarma treatment method which involves application of warm medicated oil over the body with mild pressure. The medicine is rubbed over the body in directions comfortable to the patient. It improves strength and alleviates Vata. Abhyanga is a type of Bahya Snehana which can be performed as therapeutic procedure as well as preventive procedure.

The patient is made to sit on the Abhyanga table with leg extended. The oil is to be heated to optimum temperature and applied over the head, ears and soles of the feet. And then the oil is applied uniformly with mild pressure over the body by two masseurs standing on both sides of the table. Massage is started from scalp, head and moves down to neck, upper back, shoulders, upper arms, forearms, hands and then chest, abdomen, lower back and lower limbs.

Abhyanga should be done in sitting, supine, right lateral and left lateral positions and prone position. At the end of the procedure the oil on the body is wiped off with tissue or towel. The procedure normally takes 30- 40 minutes.

Patient is advised to take complete rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Bath can be taken with hot water and soap to remove the oil from the body. Light semisolid digestible diet is advised after the bath.

Ilakkizhi: ‘Ila’ means leaves and ‘Kizhi’ means bolus. This is a highly effective therapy is bone and joint inflammations.

In this therapy, leaves of medicinal plants are heated and tied in a bolus. This bolus is then applied to the affected area to provide heat.

Podikkizhi: In this method a mixture of herbs are dried and powdered. This is then tied to a bolus. This bolus is then heated and applied over the affected area.

Pizhichil: Pizhichil is a preparatory procedure of Panchakarma which has the advantage of producing the effects of Snehana and Swedana at the same time. Pizhichil has its origin in Kerala Ayurveda. Pizhichil is a procedure by which the body is made to perspire by means of pouring warm medicated oil in a specific manner.

The patient is made to sit on a dhara table with legs extended. A cotton swab after soaking in suitable oil is applied over the scalp. Then Karnapurana (application of oil in the ears) is done. The rolled cotton cloth has to be tied above the ears, around the head at the level of forehead.Ears should be plugged with cotton and oil is applied all over the body. Gentle massage is performed by two masseurs attending on either sides of the patient.

The oil used for Pizhichil is to be heated by keeping the vessel on a hot water bath. The temperature of the oil must be comfortable to the patient. Then piece of cloth is to be dipped in the warm oil and squeezed over body with right hand. Simultaneously gentle massage is done with left hand. The oil should flow in uniform stream from the thumb facing downwards from a height 12 to 20 cms. or as per the condition of the disease./ patient. This process is continued in seven positions given below.

Basically only 3 positions are described- Sitting, Supine and Prone, but practically 7 positions are followed.

    - Sitting

    - Supine

    - Left lateral

    - Prone

    - Right lateral

    - Supine

    - Sitting

After Pizhichil, body of the patient is to be massaged gently and oil is to be wiped off with clean towel over the scalp and body. Then fresh oil is applied all over the body and covered with blanket or cotton cloth. Rest is advised for few minutes followed by hot water bath.

The duration of Pizhichil varies from 45 -60 minutes and usually performed 7,14 or 21 days according to the condition of the patient/ disease.

Pizhichil is performed for Neuromuscular disorders like Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Peripheral Neuropathy, Muscular and Ligamentous injuries. It is also effective in Orthopaedic & Rheumatological problems like cervical spondylosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Other degenerative joint diseases.

Navarakizhi: In this therapy, medicated oil is applied to the whole body and then the body is massaged with small cotton cloth boluses filled with cooked Njavara rice. Njavara rice has immense medicinal value.

The boluses are dipped in this regenerating mixture of cow's milk and a brewed herbal decoction, and then applied to the body, causing the body to sweat.

Kativasti: The procedure is performed in the lumbar spine. This area around the lumbar spine is called 'Kati'. In this procedure warm medicated oil is allowed to retain on the cervical area for a certain period of time, by making use of a sealed compartment using wheat flour or black gram paste.

Warming the lumbar using Kativasti improves nutrition and blood supply to the intervertebral discs and nerve roots of the region, as a result, reduced pain and inflammation, eliminates muscle spasms, increase metabolic processes in the tissues of the spine and rejuvenates all structures of the spine, including intervertebral discs. Kativasti is used in spondylosis of the lumbar spine, sciatica, lumbago and other diseases.
