Ayurvedic Explanation of Psoriasis

According to Ayurveda, the psoriasis is a disorder of all three doshas, whereby Vata controls the differentiation and Pitta controls the ripening of the skin cells. Pitta reinforcing diet and lifestyle is considered as a trigger of psoriasis. Correspondingly, Ayurveda recommends certain detoxification procedures and a strict diet. The patient should follow an ayurvedic food and dietary habit, as this will support the healing process. The therapy is also difficult because there are different types of psoriasis.

Strong dandruff formation and mild itching in dry skin are symptoms of the Vata type, severely reddened and burning skin speak for Pitta, severe itching and wet skin lesions for Kapha. Therefore it is necessary that an experienced Ayurveda doctor identify the types of doshas and prescribe the right treatment routine.

Body detoxification is the first step towards psoriasis healing. Unless the toxins are eliminated and the body is cleansed, the real healing process doesn’t begin. Hence, it is very important to separate toxins from your tissues and blood first and then flush them out of your body.

Panchakarma is a bio-cleansing regime to remove all the toxins accumulated the body. Panchakarma explains a number of detoxification therapies, and an ayurveda doctor after a thorough diagnosis recommends the therapies required depending on the doshas identified.

The treatment procedure starts with-

Consultation with an ayurveda physician. (We at superbeing arranges free consultation over the phone or email with a specialized doctor, provided you have send a detailed description of the disease condition and the concerned medical reports)

The doctor performs thorough diagnosis of your body by analyzing your medical reports. He then prescribes a treatment routine to be followed-

A typical treatment routine includes:

    1. No of days required for treatment

    2. The therapies to be followed in each stages of treatment

    3. Number of total sessions required for each therapy

    4. Internal medicines and its timings

    5. Diet to be followed during treatment

    6. Do’s and Don’ts  to be followed before and after  each session

Some of the Panchakarma therapies advised in Ayurveda for Psoriasis are :

Vamana means to induce vomiting; it is a Bio-cleansing measure meant for the elimination of doshas (mainly kapha) accumulated in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Vamana is conducted in the morning preferable between 7 to 8 A.M. If the patient is on empty stomach, a special type of rice preparation made from 1:6 ratio of rice and water, with ghee may be given before treatment. Then Snehana and Swedana are performed. After these procedures patient is advised to sit comfortably in a chair. The a mixture of milk is given full stomach. Vacha powder with honey is given to lick in between.

Medicines for Vamana should be administered in proper quantity, according to the age, strength, constitution, season etc. Usually Vamana starts with 10-15 minutes after giving the medicine. While the patient starts vomiting, masseur massages back and chest in upward direction. To stimulate the urge for the bouts of vomiting, warm water mixed with some herbs is given repeatedly.

Vamana is the best treatment procedure for gastric problems and some respiratory diseases.

Virechana is the procedure by which vitiated doshas are eliminated through the anal route. It is the treatment of choice for the pitta dominant individuals.

Before Virechana the patient should undergo the preparatory procedures Snehana & Swedana. Snehana is done for 3-7 days and then Swedana for another 3 days. The medicine for purgation is to be given early morning in around 6 A.M on empty stomach. Usually the purgation will start after 3 hours. Warm water may be given in small doses, when the patient feels thirsty or the urge for evacuation is not felt sufficient. When the evacuation of the bowel is complete as per the features described for proper purgation, the patient is advised to take complete rest.

Virechana is the best treatment for Gastrointestinal disorders, Dermatological disorders etc. Virechana cleans the channels by the removal of accumulated waste products, undigested material, and the toxins mainly from the gut (Gastrointestinal tract). It enhances the appetite, power of digestion and absorption of food.

Ayurveda treatment, carried out with oils, milk or a special preparation of milk, which are gently poured between the eyebrows and the forehead.

The main benefits of shirodhara are- reduces stress and nervous tension, blood circulation to the brain, improves quality of sleep etc.

Kayachikitsa is related to soul, mind & body. Psychosomatic theory recognizes that the mind can create illness in the body and vice versa.

Kayachikitsa describes 7 body constitutions and 7 mental constitutions.

  1. Vayu (air/energy)
  2. Pitta (fire)
  3. Kapha(Water)
  4. Vayu/ Pitta
  5. Vayu/ Kapha
  6. Pitta/ Kapha
  7. Tridosha (A combination of all 3)

Although finding the cause of an illness is still a mystery to modern science, it was the main goal of Ayurveda. Six stages of the development of disease were known, including aggravation, accumulation, overflow, relocation, a build up in a new site, and manifestation into a recognizable disease.

Modern equipment and diagnosis can only detect a disease during the fifth and sixth stages of illness. Ayurvedic physicians can recognize an illness in the making before it creates more serious imbalance in the body. Health is seen as a balance of the biological humors, whereas disease is an imbalance of the humors. Ayurveda creates balance by supplying deficient humors and reducing the excess ones. Surgery is seen as a last resort.

In Kayachikitsa, a unique therapy called Panchakarma, completely removes toxins from the body. This method reverses the disease path from its manifestation stage, back into the bloodstream, and eventually into the gastrointestinal tract (the original site of the disease). It is achieved through special diets, oil massage, and steam therapy. At the completion of these therapies, special forms of emesis, purgation, and enema remove excesses from their sites of origin. Finally, Ayurveda rejuvenates- rebuilding the body’s cells and tissues after toxins are removed.

In this method medicated powders are made into a paste and is applied as a pack over the affected area.

Ayurvedic Diet for Psoriasis

Following an anti-inflammatory diet is very important for Psoriasis.

Avoid sweeteners, refined sugar, inferior fats and too much animal protein (especially dairy products).

Consume anti oxidising food: Vitamin A, C, D, E, magnesium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids.

Consume 3 liters of water daily.

Probiotic foods are very good

“Ghee” has been appreciated in Ayurveda for thousands of years because of its health- promoting and anti-inflammatory properties. Ghee has a regulating influence on the blood fat values and protects against arteriosclerosis. Use ghee for cooking instead of other oils because of the fact that it remains stable even at higher temperatures, whereas other vegetable oils produce harmful trans fats on heating.
