Cervical Spondylosis is a widespread disease that worsens in the course of life. Cervical Spondylosis is an age-related alteration of the cervical spine joints. It occur due to the wearing of the cartilages and bones of the cervical spine. This disease is also called as Osteoarthritis of the cervical spine.

Statistics show that more than 90% of people aged over 65 suffer from Spondylosis. Many people actually are unaware of the fact that they have spondylosis as the typical symptoms are missing in the initial stages.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis

Aging: Cervical spondylosis usually occur when degenerative changes appear in the cervical spine joints. From the age of 40, the intervertebral discs become dry and begins to shrink. This shrinking of the discs ensures that there is an increased bone contact.


As the age increases, cracks can develop in the intervertebral discs. This can proceed for disc herniation or disc bulging conditions.

Stress: Increased stress on the discs due to heavy lifting or other work related activities.

Injuries: An injury to the disc that could have occurred a long time back.

Posture: Posture of the neck over long periods in an uncomfortable position or repetition of the same neck movements throughout the day.

Genetic Factors: Studies suggest that family history of patients indicate that there are changes that spondylosis symptoms can be inherited.

Lack of exercise or being overweight is a strong reason for Spondylosis.

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis

Most people with Cervical Spondylosis doesn’t show any noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. When symptoms occur, they may be mild or severe, develop gradually, or occur suddenly.

Pain in the shoulder area. Pain is intensified on standing, sitting, sneezing, coughing or backward bending of the neck.

Muscle weakness- this makes it difficult for the patient to lift his arms or hold objects.

Stiffness in the neck, that worsens gradually and also causes movement restriction.

Tingling or numbness, typically on shoulders and arms.

Some rare symptoms include indigestion, bloating, uncontrollable bowel movement, dry skin, loss of balance etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Cervical Spondylosis

Ayurveda explains Spondylosis as an aggravation of Vata-dosha. This causes degeneration of the tissues and joints of the neck region.

Vata aggravated doshas are caused by-

Intake of cold, dry foods.

Long intervals between meals.

Acidic, spicy, fatty food intake causes vata impaired doshas.

Excessive physical and mental anxiety due to work pressure.

Long working hours at night, smoking habits, lack of exercise also can be causes of vata- doshas.

Ayurvedic treatment of Cervical spondylosis aims at satisfying vata aggravated doshas by in internal and external treatments. Internal treatments concentrate at improving digestion by forcing a strict ayurvedic diet and certain herbal medications which can improve the digestive fire of the body and thereby rejuvenates body tissues.

The doctor performs thorough diagnosis of your body by analyzing your medical condition, body constitution and the doshas causing the illness. He then prescribes a treatment routine to be followed-

Panchakarma defines a number of treatment methods, for the removal of toxins. This involves both internal and external medications and an ideal diet.

Some for the Panchakarma therapies performed in treating Cervical Spondylosis condition are:

Abhyanga: Abhyanga is a part of Panchakarma treatment method which involves application of warm medicated oil over the body with mild pressure. The medicine is rubbed over the body in directions comfortable to the patient. It improves strength and alleviates Vata. Abhyanga is a type of Bahya Snehana which can be performed as therapeutic procedure as well as preventive procedure.

The patient is made to sit on the Abhyanga table with leg extended. The oil is to be heated to optimum temperature and applied over the head, ears and soles of the feet. And then the oil is applied uniformly with mild pressure over the body by two masseurs standing on both sides of the table. Massage is started from scalp, head and moves down to neck, upper back, shoulders, upper arms, forearms, hands and then chest, abdomen, lower back and lower limbs.

Abhyanga should be done in sitting, supine, right lateral and left lateral positions and prone position. At the end of the procedure the oil on the body is wiped off with tissue or towel. The procedure normally takes 30- 40 minutes.

Patient is advised to take complete rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Bath can be taken with hot water and soap to remove the oil from the body. Light semisolid digestible diet is advised after the bath.

Vamana: Vamana means to induce vomiting; it is a Bio-cleansing measure meant for the elimination of doshas (mainly kapha) accumulated in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Vamana is conducted in the morning preferable between 7 to 8 A.M. If the patient is on empty stomach, a special type of rice preparation made from 1:6 ratio of rice and water, with ghee may be given before treatment. Then Snehana and Swedana are performed. After these procedures patient is advised to sit comfortably in a chair. The a mixture of milk is given full stomach. Vacha powder with honey is given to lick in between.

Medicines for Vamana should be administered in proper quantity, according to the age, strength, constitution, season etc. Usually Vamana starts with 10-15 minutes after giving the medicine. While the patient starts vomiting, masseur massages back and chest in upward direction. To stimulate the urge for the bouts of vomiting, warm water mixed with some herbs is given repeatedly.

Vamana is the best treatment procedure for gastric problems and some respiratory diseases.

Virechana: Virechana is the procedure by which vitiated doshas are eliminated through the anal route. It is the treatment of choice for the pitta dominant individuals.

Before Virechana the patient should undergo the preparatory procedures Snehana & Swedana. Snehana is done for 3-7 days and then Swedana for another 3 days. The medicine for purgation is to be given early morning in around 6 A.M on empty stomach. Usually the purgation will start after 3 hours. Warm water may be given in small doses, when the patient feels thirsty or the urge for evacuation is not felt sufficient. When the evacuation of the bowel is complete as per the features described for proper purgation, the patient is advised to take complete rest.

Virechana is the best treatment for Gastrointestinal disorders, Dermatological disorders etc. Virechana cleans the channels by the removal of accumulated waste products, undigested material, and the toxins mainly from the gut (Gastrointestinal tract). It enhances the appetite, power of digestion and absorption of food.

Ilakkizhi: ‘Ila’ means leaves and ‘Kizhi’ means bolus. This is a highly effective therapy is bone and joint inflammations.

In this therapy, leaves of medicinal plants are heated and tied in a bolus. This bolus is then applied to the affected area to provide heat.

Podikkizhi: In this method a mixture of herbs are dried and powdered. This is then tied to a bolus. This bolus is then heated and applied over the affected area.

Greeva Vasti: 'Greeva' means neck and 'Vasti' means to hold. In this procedure strong medicated oil is allowed to retain on the cervical area for a certain period of time, by making use of a sealed compartment using wheat flour or black gram paste. The therapy improves circulation, muscle and connective tissue strength, lubricates the joints and promotes its flexibility. Greeva alleviates cervical spondylitis, stiff neck, sore muscles, upper back aches etc. The duration of the treatment varies from 30 to 40 minutes depending up on the condition of the individual. 

Pizhichil: Pizhichil is a preparatory procedure of Panchakarma which has the advantage of producing the effects of Snehana and Swedana at the same time. Pizhichil has its origin in Kerala Ayurveda. Pizhichil is a procedure by which the body is made to perspire by means of pouring warm medicated oil in a specific manner.

The patient is made to sit on a dhara table with legs extended. A cotton swab after soaking in suitable oil is applied over the scalp. Then Karnapurana (application of oil in the ears) is done. The rolled cotton cloth has to be tied above the ears, around the head at the level of forehead.Ears should be plugged with cotton and oil is applied all over the body. Gentle massage is performed by two masseurs attending on either sides of the patient.

The oil used for Pizhichil is to be heated by keeping the vessel on a hot water bath. The temperature of the oil must be comfortable to the patient. Then piece of cloth is to be dipped in the warm oil and squeezed over body with right hand. Simultaneously gentle massage is done with left hand. The oil should flow in uniform stream from the thumb facing downwards from a height 12 to 20 cms. or as per the condition of the disease./ patient. This process is continued in seven positions given below.

Basically only 3 positions are described- Sitting, Supine and Prone, but practically 7 positions are followed.

    - Sitting

    - Supine

    - Left lateral

    - Prone

    - Right lateral

    - Supine

    - Sitting

After Pizhichil, body of the patient is to be massaged gently and oil is to be wiped off with clean towel over the scalp and body.Then fresh oil is applied all over the body and covered with blanket or cotton cloth. Rest is advised for few minutes followed by hot water bath.

The duration of Pizhichil varies from 45 -60 minutes and usually performed 7,14 or 21 days according to the condition of the patient/ disease.

Pizhichil is performed for Neuromuscular disorders like Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Peripheral Neuropathy, Muscular and Ligamentous injuries. It is also effective in Orthopaedic & Rheumatological problems like cervical spondylosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Other degenerative joint diseases.

Ayurvedic home remedies for Cervical Spondylosis

Gentle massage in the neck region with warm sesame oil can relieve pain.

Applying heat on the affected area can provide relief to pain.

Improving digestion is a major preventive measure for controlling the cervical spondylosis symptoms-

Eat 2-3 cloves of raw garlic on empty stomach in the morning with water. This can improve the digestion.

Make a mixture of dried ginger, celery and cumin seeds in equal amounts. Consume this by mixing with warm water before going to bed.
