Ayurveda defines very effective treatment for controlling Osteoarthritis condition. Ayurveda believes that the condition is caused by an imbalance in the doshas of the body, one of several that involve the circulation, function and health of the organ systems throughout the body.

Osteoarthritis is a condition of degeneration in the joints and the underlying bone. This is common in older people aged above 60 years, people who sit and work for long office hours and those who have had some injuries in the past. Osteoarthritis is actually a combination of two conditions-  arthritis, which mean joint inflammation and Osteoporosis, decrease in the density of the bone.


According to WHO stats, 9.6% of men and 18.0% of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis worldwide. 80% of those with osteoarthritis will have limitations in movement, and 25% cannot perform their major daily activities of life. In India alone, more than 10 million cases are diagnosed within a year.

Osteoarthritis, according to the ayurvedic approach, is caused by an imbalance in the dosha kapha, which controls lubrication, padding and synovial joint fluid, among other functions. This depletion of the synovial fluid layer and the cartilage leads to a narrower gap between the mixed ends, often resulting in friction, pain when the joint is twisted and common inflammation.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Osteoarthritis Condition

  1. Panchakarma detoxification therapy.

  2. Changes in the diet and lifestyle

  3. Yoga and meditation

Panchakarma, is a bio-cleansing treatment intended to eliminate toxins from the body and thereby enhances the immunity. The panchakarma treatment consists of different therapies, which are employed depending on the body and disease condition.

An Ayurvedic doctor performs a thorough diagnosis of your body and the disease condition. He then prescribes a treatment routine to be followed.

The treatment routine would include-

1. No of days required for treatment

2. The therapies to be followed in each stages of treatment

3. Number of total sessions required for each therapy

4. Internal medicines and its timings


5. Diet to be followed during treatment


6. Do’s and Don’ts  to be followed before and after  each session


Some of the therapies used in Osteoarthritis treatment are


Abhyangam:  Abhyangham is a Panchakarma therapy which is very effective in Arthritis conditions. This involves application of warm medicated oil over the body with mild pressure. The pressure varies according to the condition of the individual. The patient is made to sit on a special wooden table. Massage is performed by two therapists, standing on either sides of the table, and applying the pressure in a synchronized manner.




Elakizhi: ‘Ela’ means leaves and ‘Kizhi’ means bolus. This is a highly effective therapy is bone and joint inflammations.  In this therapy, leaves of medicinal plants are heated and tied in a bolus. This bolus is then applied to the affected area to provide heat.




Podi Kizhi: In this method a mixture of herbs are dried and powdered. This is then tied to a bolus. This bolus is then heated and applied over the affected area.




Virechana: Virechana is therapeutic purgation.Virechana is the procedure by which vitiated doshas are eliminated through the anal route. The medicine for purgation is to be given early morning in around 6 A.M on empty stomach. Usually the purgation will start after 3 hours. Warm water may be given in small doses, when the patient feels thirsty or the urge for evacuation is not felt sufficient. When the evacuation of the bowel is complete as per the features described for proper purgation, the patient is advised to take complete rest.


Lepam: In this method medicated powders are made into a paste and is applied as a pack over the affected area.




Typically the doctor advises for 7 days/ 14 days/ 21 days treatment routine, depending on the severity of the disease. After the treatment process is complete, the doctor prescribes further medications, diet plan and life style changes. During the treatment process, the patient will be given guidance on basis yoga and meditation.
