Liver performs more than 500 different functions in our body. It is made up of almost 30,000 million hepatic cells making it the largest internal organ in the body. Liver plays a major role in digestion and detoxification of the body.
Some of the common disorders affecting the liver are fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis.
Liver cirrhosis is a slowly progressing disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, eventually preventing the liver from functioning properly. The scar tissue blocks the blood flow through the liver and slows the processing of hormones, nutrients, drugs, and naturally produce toxins. These toxins then gets accumulated, gradually slows the production of proteins and other substances made by the liver. This condition increases the size of the spleen and as a result esophageal nerves will break and lead to internal bleeding.
One of the major causes of this condition is excessive consumption of alcohol on a regular basis. Another causes include regular use of certain drugs, like paracetamol, some antibiotics etc. Non-alcoholic reasons include being overweight, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
Ayurveda explains different preventive treatment methods for liver cirrhosis. The treatment involves various detoxification procedures (defined as Panchakarma) which helps in the overall functioning of the body. Shamana Chikitsa and Kayakalpa are panchakarma procedures which helps in detoxification of liver.
Ayurveda also defines certain life style changes & diet restrictions which prevent generating toxin in the liver. Ayurveda treats alcohol as poison. So usage of alcohol should be avoided for a healthy liver.
It is very important to do this detoxification treatment at least twice a year for preventing the body from getting infections. Since ayurveda is completely natural, it is completely free from side-effects.
