Dental implant is the most natural method of replacing teeth which are lost due to various reasons like injury, tooth decay, gum infections, etc. Dental implants are far more effective and risk free than bridging. The advantages are detailed below.

Implant Procedure

A dental implant is a surgical component made of titanium alloy which has similar characteristics as the root that holds the teeth. Implants are performed by an expert dental professional in a well equipped dental clinic. During the procedure, the dental professional attaches this surgical component to the jaw bone to act the same functions of the root.

Tissues surrounding the jaw bones grow around this implant, and gradually the implant becomes part of the jaw bone, similar to the root of the tooth. Then implants get enough strength, for attaching crown, bridge, etc.

Only local anesthesia is required for implant procedure. It is also not very painful. Painkillers are prescribed after the procedure is complete.

There are two major types of implant-

1. Endosteal Implant: These implants are shaped like small screws, cylinders, which is directly fitted into the jaw bone. This is then kept to settle for a month. During this period, it adapts to the tissues to gain strength. Later a crown or bridge is fixed to fill the gap of missing teeth.

2. Subperiosteal Implant: This type of implant is a metal frame fixed under the gum, but on or above the jaw bone. Small metal posts extend from the metal frame. These posts acts as anchors for the replacement teeth. This is used in patients who have a shallow jaw bone.

Advantages of Implants

1. During bridging, the tooth on both sides of the gap are grinded to hold and strengthen the bridge. But in case of implants, this support is not required as this is planted to the jaw bone. So grinding of the healthy teeth on both sides is not required.

2. Bridging can be complicated to employ if the gap is located in back. Bridging cannot be done by attaching the bridge to the teeth in the front. In such cases only implants can be done. So, no matter where the location is, replacement can be performed by dental implants.

3. Implants are important for keeping the jaw bone healthy. Due to the gap caused by tooth loss, the part of the jaw bone surrounding that area becomes functionless and gradually leading to deterioration of that area. If an implant is placed in that area, this part of the bone starts to function again, thereby gets healthy again.

4. A common problem faced by people using an artificial teeth set is slight shaky movement when chewing. This can be solved by doing a mini implant, which can strengthen and hold the teeth set. This is very effective for older people when chewing food.

5. The case of losing one tooth, can be fixed by one implant. If a couple of teeth are lost, two implants, one for each tooth are not required. Two implants can support replacement of 4-5 teeth. Replacing an entire row of teeth would require only six implants, provided a supported bone structure. Since implant costs are estimated according to the number of implants, a fewer number can reduce the cost considerably.

Before going for implants, take care of the following

1. People who are healthy , who don’t have any health concerns are eligible for implants

2. Implants don’t have any age barrier. Young or old doesn’t matter as long as they are healthy and free from health concerns.

3. Smoking has adverse effects on implants. So before going into the implant procedure, it is very important to quit smoking.

4. People with diabetes cannot do implants. Only when the diabetes in under control, implant procedure is done.

5. People with certain sleep disorders face a condition called teeth grinding during sleep. This condition can result in using more number of implants than normal.

6. Before going for implant, x-rays and scanning are performed to analyze the structure of the jaw bone by a dental professional. Only after this analysis, the decision on implant procedure is taken.

After dental implants

1. For maintaining the implants healthy, oral and dental hygiene is very important.

2. It is very important to do brushing and flossing of the implanted teeth, just like taking care of normal teeth.

3. Regular check-up is required at least for the initial 6 months after the procedure.

4. Regular teeth cleaning is also good for the health of the implants.

5. It is important for people to quit smoking after implants, because they cause adverse effects.
