Swedana is a process to induce sweating (sudation) artificially in a patient who has already undergone Snehana.

Swedana has many classifications-

  • On the basis of induction of heat- Thermal & Non Thermal
  • On the basis of application of heat- Local & General
  • On the basis of nature of heat- Dry heat & Moist heat
  • On the basis of intensity of heat- High sweat, Medium sweat & Low sweat

The most common sudation therapy is Vashpa Sweda (Steam Bath). In Steam Bath, medicated steam is applied to the patient’s body for a certain period of time to get perspiration. It removes stiffness, heaviness and coldness from the body.

The patient is advised to lie down inside a steam-bath chamber after massage with warm oil. A thick cotton sheet may be used to cover the body to get proper perspiration. The patient is to remain in the chamber for about 15-20 minutes.

Swedana is effective for neuromuscular diseases like Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Sciatica etc. Also effective in Rheumatological problems like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and is a great rejuvenation therapy.
