Headache, also known as ‘cephalalgia’, is the symptom of pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. It occurs in migraines, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. The causes of headache are stress, lack of sleep, physical exhaustion, physiologic changes in the head and brain, dilation and constriction of blood vessels, abnormal activity of certain neurons, smoking and alcohol usage, anxiety and depression. Headache symptoms may include moderate or severe pain that affects the whole head, a part of the head, forehead or the eyes, nausea, difficulty in sleeping, loss of appetite, feeling of uneasiness.According to Ayurvedic texts too much of heat generated in the body (or pitta) leads to headaches. In such situations, cooling the body down may help reduce the pain. Ayurvedic medicine and therapies hold the key in treating headache. Dharas, nasya and herbs are beneficial to cure headache.
