Paraplegia Kerala

About Paraplegia

Paraplegia describes complete or incomplete paralysis affecting the legs and possibly also the trunk, but not the arms. The extent to which the trunk is affected depends on the level of spinal cord injury. This results in the loss of feeling and movement, to some degree, of the legs. In Ayurveda, this condition is known as ‘Pakshaghatha’. Paraplegics can experience anything from impairment of leg movement to complete loss of leg movement all the way up to the chest. The causes are temporary ischemic attack, cerebrovascular accident, head trauma, diabetes mellitus, and brain infections. The common symptoms comprise unexpected weakness and loss of function of hands, legs or both, trouble walking, holding, or grasping, increased muscle spasm and stiffness, delay in developmental highlights for children like standing, sitting and walking, in certain conditions, difficulty in speech. The ayurvedic treatment includes thala, nasya, sirodhara, ksheeradhara, sirovasti, ksheeradhooma, lepana, and herbal medicines.
